Review – St. Petersburg, FL – Nitally’s Thai-Mex Cuisine and the Inferno Soup Challenge

by Nicole Lee

I need to preface this by saying this experience may have been one of the worst decisions of my life. Hands down, without question. I need to follow that up with, I’m really glad I did it just to say I did. When I look back on the years I spent kickin’ around this area, really this planet, I’m going to be proud of myself for being so reckless and living without the inhibitions that tie so many other people to the ground. With all of that said…

Tucked at the end of Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, Florida there is a little restaurant. It’s called Nitally’s Thai-Mex Cuisine. Yes, you read that correctly. Thai-Mex fusion cuisine. I was a little skeptical, but apparently the owners, husband (Mexican) and wife (Thai), thought it was something that could work. The menu offers a strictly Mexican section, strictly Thai, and then a fusion portion which includes items like a green curry burrito (didn’t try it, but would love to).

The menu also offers poison. Again, yes, you read the correctly. They’ve dubbed it under a very different name, but make no mistake, Nitally’s Inferno Soup is nothing less than toxic. This particular item comes with a large pay out- if you can handle the “heat”. The King Inferno is 48 ounces of the hottest food you’ve ever thought to torture your body with. Now, I’d say “spiciest”, but it didn’t taste spicy. My mouth was FINE. It was my belly, my skin, my head. In less than two minutes I was pouring sweat, my skin was on fire and I wanted to die. I’ve never drank enough, eaten bad enough food, been sick enough in my life to begin to compare to the horror that was this challenge. At nearly 100 challengers they have yet to find a winner. When (more accurately read: if) they ever find a winner that luck individual will walk away with a total of $800.00. So, if you think you have the stomach. If you think you have the resilience. If you think you have the balls. Try this. Try this and tell me how it turns out for you. I expect photos, as it’s only fair that you’re seeing mine.

I wish all of the brave souls that continue to try this luck (you’ll need it). I cheer them on with the hope that one day, some day, someone will be able to walk away with the prize. (I may start posting links to their Facebook page with all of the crying, failing souls, what do you think?)

Either way, enjoy my pain. :)

  1. Im pretty young, used to the spicy food, this sounds super easy. Too bad I can’t drive yet to get myself down there and defeat the challenge instead of talking all big.
Question: Do I have to be 18+ to attempt this or is it any age? Parental consent is possible to sign a waiver that I am doing this at my own risk and health and all responisibilities goes directly to me and my choices?
