Review – Brandon, FL – New Hot Wok

by Nicole Lee

Nestled in a nearly abandoned shopping center on Kingsway Road, New Hot Wok could possibly be the best Chinese/Thai take out in town! We used to hit a couple of different joints but this one has stolen the show. It’s no more expensive or greater distance to make pick it up (as they do not deliver) but they do absolutely everything right.

My suggestions are: flip the menu over and order from the Thai side. The curries are heavenly, the spring rolls (not summer) are spectacular and the fried rice is to die for.

The owners are the cutest and sweetest people I’ve ever met. They give us Thai tea while we wait for our food to be delivered, the mango/cucumber salad pictured below is also tossed in on the house. They recognize us when we walk through the door and offer a kind good bye when we exit with way more food that is necessary.

I would recommend this hole in the wall to anyone in town and am sure to make a visit myself at least once a week!

Recipes from Wednesday Cook Night – Roasted Lemon and Asparagus Pizza with Homemade Alfredo

by Nicole Lee

This is a simple, fresh nutritional meal. I substituted store bought alfredo with a homemade, reduced fat version which made me exceptionally happy. Definitely a great meal to eat while we watched the Tampa Bay Lightning take it to the Boston Bruins! Game 7 on Friday!!

P.S. I want a kitchen with more light.

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. pizza dough (homemade or store bought)
  • 1 lemon
  • 8-10 stalks asparagus
  • reduced fat mozzarella
  • salt and pepper
  • olive oil
  • butter
  • half and half
  • parmesan cheese
  • garlic
  • flour (for alfredo and rolling dough)
Method:
1. Cut lemons into thin slices, brush with olive oil, season with salt and pepper and place in oven (on broil) for approximately 3-5 minutes, or until lightly browned.

wcn - 1     wcn - 2

2. (Not pictured) Melt 1 tbsp. butter and saute garlic, salt and pepper to taste.

3. Add 1 tbsp. flour until fully integrated.

4. Add half and half, stirring constantly, until sauce starts to thicken.

5. Add parmesan cheese until it melts and set aside. (Consistency will depend on how much cream you add, I like mine thicker, so I use less cream.)

6. Roll pizza dough (using flour to keep it from sticking to your board or hands).

7. Place on rack or pan and aerate with roller or fork.

wcn - 5     wcn - 7

8. Coat asparagus in olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

9. Top pizza with sauce, mozzarella, asparagus and lemons.

10. Bake per dough directions. (I baked them for approximately 20 minutes at 375 degrees.)

11. Enjoy!!

Introductions all around – Caturday with Loki

by Nicole Lee

Now, I know Frost told you all that Loki is the more social of the two of them, but he can be a little shy. I’m trying to get him to open up and be a little more out there so I got him on a leash and took him outside today! Unfortunately it was very, very hot and he was still getting used to the harness and leash. By the time the event was complete he was ready to just relax in a corner (as far away from me as he could get) rather than tell you guys about Caturday. Either way, it was a fun time and I think he’s going to start liking it a little more. I’ll make sure he gives you a little more insight into the Life of Loki the next time he pops in for a post. :)

Tampa Bay Lighting Watch Party – Game 2

by Nicole Lee

Though I was born in Florida I spent most of my life in Michigan. I am a hockey fan beyond words. I played for eight years when I was young and have watched it as long as I can remember. So when I moved to Florida I thought I was leaving a huge part of my life behind. Boy oh boy was I wrong! Tampa has a great hockey following and ever since they announced Steve Yzerman (my FAVORITE PLAYER OF ALL TIME) as their GM they have only been rising in the ranks. And when the St. Pete Times Forum told us they’d be hosting watch parties for away games during the Finals? OH YES, you knew I’d be there!

The crowd was rambunctious, the food was surprisingly delicious and the weather was cold. Everything was perfect. It was just what I remembered hockey being, and even though I’m situated in the Tampa area, rather than the frozen north, I definitely found kindred spirits. (I’m also glad to have introduced a little part of my life to Scott’s.)

Unfortunately! the Lightning did lose last night’s game 5-6, leaving the series 1-1. But there’s time to catch up and they’ll be home tomorrow to take it Boston, cause let’s face it- they are ALL IN!

Tropical Heatwave – Tampa – May 14th, 2011

by Nicole Lee

Tropical Heatwave – Tampa – May 14th, 2011 Welcome to Saturday night in Ybor City, Florida, home to WMNF’s Tropical Heatwave. A night of live music, drinks, dancing and pretty much the most fun a warm May evening has to offer. The list of bands scattered throughout the city was extensive but our list included Sleep Vikings (from Tampa!!), Hymn For Her, Those Darlins’, Cracker, Peelander-Z and Bright Light Social Hour.

We were hoping to see Kaleigh Baker, but she cancelled last second due to food poisoning. Overall it was one of the best “shows” I’ve seen. The diverse crowd, the beer, drink specials, corner-of-the-street-vendor-nomz and amazing music keeps WMNF putting this show on year after year after year- and I hope they never stop.

Notes: All photos were taken with my iPhone4. While I love taking high quality dSLR photos with Dante (my camera), when I’m rocking out and drinking that much I can’t afford to have that much equipment on my person. Either way, hope you enjoy. :)
