30 day photo challenge – November 18-20

by Nicole Lee

Post, what is this, four? I am keeping up getting things posted on time (it’s actually kind of freaking me out)- but either way, here we go. Remember, remember this is this is only half the project. Head over to Rob’s site to see his posts for the prompts and enjoy!

memory; ความทรงจำ

November 20th, 2011 the new Zelda game (Skyward Sword) for the Wii was released. It reminds me of the gaming I used to do with my friends when we were in high school, college and beyond. So far the game is stellar, though not being in Hyrule, no Epona or Ganon/Ganondorf is somewhat biazarre. That said, I’m not too far into it so things may change yet! Keep an eye out as eventually I will be reviewing the game once I’ve finished.

numbers; ตัวเลข

I wasn’t sure what to do with this prompt. I didn’t want to be overly obvious by taking a photo of something like a clock face or whatever. So instead I considered numbers that are most prominent in my mind and this is what I came up with: calories. Calories are, without a doubt, the numbers that dance in my mind all day every day. Pizza is entirely outside of “allowed food categories”, but sometimes you just have to go for it (and it was DELICIOUS!!).

sound; เสียง

I was dog sitting for a friend over the weekend and after having lived with cats for five or six years now I forgot how loud dogs are. Honestly. Every time I got off the couch, every time my phone buzzed, every time the next door neighbor kids laughed or shouted these dogs were up in arms. It wasn’t too bad for a few days, but I’m glad to me home with my little kitties. Other than the little motor boat purr baby Loki is fabulously silent.

Decision Making and Lifestyles – Going Vegetarian!

by Nicole Lee

** This is going to be one of the few posts I put up without any pictures, but this decisions is important enough that I really wanted to share/document it and the thought process that led me to it.

So, for a while I used eat strictly vegetarian, but it was mostly for weight loss and other reasons that didn’t carry enough weight for me to want to stick through. Sometime in the last two years (either September/October of last year or the year before) a friend of mine had challenged me to a 30 day vegetarian test. I failed. Why? A number of reasons. The guy I was dating at the time had little to no respect for the fact that that’s what I wanted and I just sort of caved to the pressure. She, on the other hand, has successfully transitioned into a strictly vegan lifestyle. (Wow!)

Looking back, I see myself, now two years out of the vegetarian lifestyle I used to lead, feeling more sluggish. I’ve gained some of the weight back that I’d lost. My hair is dry and brittle, my asthma is more easily inflamed, etc. As a general feeling I am just not happy- a huge change from how I felt physically when I didn’t have animal proteins.

Logically I started doing research into the pros and cons of eating this way and the repercussions of being part of the “machine” that is required to continue producing animals for our consumption. I’ll tell you right now, if nothing else, it makes me sick to my stomach. I guess I’d read some articles on how terrible animals are treated. I’d her statistics and filed them under “things to know”. I’d read about how it affects the environment, but none of it has had the impact that my recent research has come up with.

I don’t live the most green life possible. I’m not entirely aware of how my personal life affects the world around me- but I really, really want to change that. So here’s step one. I’ll be documenting the recipes, products and meals that I come across as well as restaurants and local events. I am so damn excited!!

30 day photo challenge – November 15-17

by Nicole Lee

And so set (3) of my thirty day project is revealed- and as previously stated, make sure to keep up with Rob for the sister part of these prompts!

purple; สีม่วง

When I first saw this prompt it brought me back to my childhood. When I was in elementary school I had a purple cotton shirt and shorts that I adored. Additionally, I paired this outfit with purple high tops (like these!!). Unfortunately those items are long since retired. Instead, my mom told me she was making eggplant tacos (surprisingly delicious!) and I couldn’t help but use it for today.

empty; หมด

I had something different planned for this, but as I forgot about my Yelp! Elite event it didn’t come through. Instead I ended up at the bar. I was going for a different angle, but with the low light, no ability to move around (crowded bar with a 50mm prime), etc. it just didn’t happen. All in all, though, I think I like it.

irony; การแฝงนัย

As soon as I came across this prompt I was worried. Fortunately a friend (and the weather!) came through. I live in the “Sunshine State”, but it rains more than pretty much anywhere else I’ve ever lived- Thailand being the obvious exception. So, this morning’s rain delivered a subtle hat’s off to the ironic and gave me a great way to nearly hit my 33% marker!

30 day photo challenge – November 12-14

by Nicole Lee

This is set (2) of my 30 day project with Rob (make sure to go check out his counterparts for the prompts!). Please enjoy!

delicious; อร่อย

This was taken at Wat Mongkolratanaram (the local Thai temple). It is, without a doubt, the closest I’ve been to Thailand since I got home. The food is incredible the volunteers are either Thai, people who lived there or married into Thai families, etc. They are friendly, informed and so, so, so happy. It makes me feel like I’m wandering the Thai markets all over again. I couldn’t be happier than when I’m there. (Outtakes one and two, just for your viewing pleasure.)

sticky; เหนียว

This is Starscream’s innards. I was trying to change the battery, drain the gas, flush the lines, etc. I ended up having to WD-40 the screw (the one out of focus) to get the fuse box up so I could get everything else out. My fingers were sticky as hell by the time I got it all out and switched around. I felt so amazing and accomplished. It didn’t work, but I learned a lot about motorcycle maintenance.

man made; มนุษย์ทำ

This is two-for if you will. This is my dad pouring cocktails over dinner in the kitchen he built/remodeled. I had a lot of other ideas for this prompt, but I’m happy with how it came out and I’m glad I got to “showcase” my dad’s work. At some point or another I’ll have to get a full shot of the room because it really is gorgeous.

30 day photo challenge – November 9-11

by Nicole Lee

I love taking photographs. I absolutely love it. Currently I am trying to “break into the business” in a way that I had never before considered possible, but lately I’ve had a number of people come to me asking if I’ll take their photos- for money! I’ve taken these jobs and moving forward all money I make from photographing will go straight to a “Nicole needs a Canon 7D” fund. Food photography is my passion (as some of you may have guessed) and ultimately my goal is to take that route.

So, in anticipation of making this more of a life path than just a hobby I enlisted the help of my friend Rob (who I met on the internet years and years ago, but have had the pleasure of visiting as well) to do a 30 day project. A photo a day with a prompt (which I stole from here). I’ll post them in threes, for a total of ten posts. I may fall behind in getting them up here regularly, but rest assured, I will continue to take them.

So, without further adieu, here are the first three. Enjoy!

upside down; คว่ำ

I tend to put all of my condiments back into my fridge upside down. I hate trying to bang it out of the bottom every time I go to use something. I struggle with this sometimes because most everything falls over as soon as I open it, but I cannot seem to make myself stop.

reflection; เงา

This is Starscream. One of my favorite possessions. I bought him and year and a half ago and currently he’s not running. I also just realized he needs a damn good cleaning as I attempted to get the “car side mirror but on a motorcycle” shot.

inside; ภายใน

When I start doing these sorts of projects I always want to take a picture of something means something to me, but recently I have come to the conclusion that it’s not necessarily about that. I need to take photos just for the sake of taking photos. So when I read the prompt “inside” I looked around my house and found the first thing that had an inside and I used it. Oddly, I really kind of like it.
